Follow the Light

Hello students. Do you sometimes look at the sky? I’m sure you do. And then, you often see the moon. And if you have studied it a bit, you will also know that it is not the moon that moves around Hukë, but the other way round. Astronomy aside – the moon has played a major role in our history. We will discuss one event in which it played an important role. Let us begin…

Grada, year 1154 of Era II

After a few centuries in existence, despite having a long history, the duchy of Lakkunin had yet to find its identity – and its power. For a long time, it had been on the side of events rather than in their center, which was quite convenient for the small country, but many inhabitants, and some dukes, wanted more because of national ambition. In the twelfth century of the Second Era, one of them finally found an opportunity, and it was not where he expected.

On one winter morning, duke Hanni of Lakkunin departed from the city of Grada for a trip around the nearby villages in order to resolve business and check the state of the region. At sunset, he was still over an hour away from the city. The group was tired, so they decided to stop by the road for some time. When his men were resting, Hanni started to look around the place. The moon was already bright in the sky, casting its yellowish light on the world. While looking between the brushes, the duke noticed glistening. He started to approach it, and eventually saw that it came from some kind of crystals. He took a few loose ones, returned to his guards and started to go towards the capital.

The next day, the duke started to examine the crystals. They were not very clear, so he saw no point in trying to sell them. However, he had a feeling they had something in themselves, so he gave them to the city’s scholars. Not long after, he received good news: the crystals were good magic catalysts – which means substances that can reduce the energy needed to achieve certain effects with magic. Upon hearing that, Hanni immediately ordered his workers to find and explore the place where he had spent the evening.

They found a decent amount of the mineral there, and set up a mining camp. A few merchants from Grada received permission to establish trade with the resource. Over time, the wealthy from most countries gained interest in the crystals, and there were numerous orders all the time. The vein was only sufficient for a short period – about five years – but all the sales provided a significant inflow of money, and allowed the duchy to not only develop, but also gain a specific character. Since then, Lakkunin started to improve their expertise in magic and related resources, and in later centuries found more similar opportunities for profit.

That’s all for this story, thank you.
